Toughest Job in America:
Finding the Right Job When You Need It

By Gary M. Moore

Why does it seem career opportunities are readily available at the times when you aren’t interested in making a change? How many times have you been approached or received an opportunity for a good job while you were content, somewhat anyway, with your then current situation? It’s just the way it is.

Those who find themselves out of a job usually find themselves short on unsolicited career opportunities. If you’re one of them, cheer up, you’re part of the majority. When you do a job well, we have a tendency to be motivated.
Here’s a short motivational track for you to follow as you tackle the job search.

Searching for the right job is full time work. Get up early, dress appropriately and begin researching and following up on all of your opportunities. Make sure you don’t fall into the trap of not looking any further because you just interviewed for another position you’d really like to have. Always assume that you don’t have a position until you have been hired. In other words keep diligently searching.

Have a prepared resume that is accurate and has no misspellings.

Even if they have you complete their company’s application form, you’ll stand out attaching yours to theirs.

Always send a “thank you” note to follow up and do it before you go to bed that same day. Many times you’re one of many trying to land a special position. Make sure you have the name of each person that interviews you. Consider hand delivering the note to them! If you do hand deliver the “thank you,” make sure you’re dressed appropriately.

The note should follow this three-step principle:

1. Thank them for their time

2. Mention you’re excited about the employment opportunity because…

3. Close with “Thank you for considering me to become a productive member of the ABC team.”

Don’t forget to place your address and phone number inside the card.
America’s toughest job also offers one of America’s greatest gifts. Finding a job or career that you can enjoy for years. Follow these steps and you’ll find yourself focused to achieve great things. A thank you note can put you ahead of the game in your job search.
